Social Practice
My socially engaged practice involves creating work that directly interacts with communities, often addressing social, political, or environmental issues through collaboration, participation, and shared experiences. I also collaborate with my audience to practice institutional critique by challenging the power structures and norms of cultural institutions.
I designed and facilitated a collaborative tile mural project for the high school I worked at. Each tile was individually hand-painted by fellow high school teachers.
Posing as a museum guide, I pretended to give a tour of the Art Institute of Chicago while actually conspiring with my audience to create hidden museum interventions and critiques.
In my drag persona "Dick", I wandered the streets of Chicago with a dry erase board and invited strangers to share their definitions of gender equality.
For about 6 months, I taught photography to the children I worked with at a Singapore Children's Society Family Service Center. I also fundraised to gather instant cameras for the kids and exhibit their photography at Raffles Girls' School Secondary School.
