Compostable Art
I create compostable art using natural, biodegradable materials such as kitchen and household waste. My art is created to break down and return to the Land, in order to challenge capitalist, colonial ideas of permanence and ownership.
Experiments using household waste (onion skins, beetroot skins, vegetable stems, flower stems) to create inks and paintings.
A series of compostable pots made from used coffee grounds, tea leaves, and vegetable waste as potential germination substrates to be installed in the wild.
I sculpted a self-portrait using raw beets and then documented the beets being eaten by compost worms. At the Waning, Waxing exhibition at the ION Orchard gallery, the time-lapse video of the composting process was projected next to a potted plant that had been fertilized by the compost from the same worms that ate the beet portrait.
How far would you go to make a beautiful sheet of paper? Are you willing to let it decompose and return where it belongs? This was a painstaking process of pressing pomelo pulp skins into a sheet of paper, only to be eaten by mold.
I saved the thick leftover stems of kale to make a sheet of paper, and documented my compost worms eating up the paper till most of it had "disappeared."
